Trucks need wiring upgrade, SUVs software update

Chrysler is recalling more than 556,000 Ram trucks, Durango SUVs and Grand Cherokees. The Rams need a wiring-harness upgrade and the SUVs require an update to their electronic stability control.

The Ram recall covers 2500, 3500, 4500 and 5500 pickups from model years 2010-2014 -- approximately 381,876 trucks in total. Most of those are located in the U.S.; some are in Canada and elsewhere. Only trucks with the 6.7-liter Cummins diesel engines are affected.

Chrysler has already investigated two cases in which fuel-heater housings showed signs of overheating, though no fires have been reported. The company says engineers discovered a terminal connector that may be subject to corrosion near the fuel heater.

Chrysler will notify affected owners. Those with questions can call (800) 853-1403. The fix involves installing new terminals made from upgraded materials.

The second recall, not related to the first, covers 184,186 Durangos and Grand Cherokees from model year 2014. After an investigation, Chrysler found that a debris cover might disrupt a communication line and disable the ESC system.

The software update restores proper communication, according to Chrsyler, and owners will be notified next month. The fixes are, of course, free.
